Over The Weekend…

Thursday night brought us another round of winter. Put together some rain, some freezing rain, and some snow along with some serious winds and you’ve got yourself a bonafide winter storm. Everything was coated in a nice layer of ice on Friday morning. Everything! The storm certainly took a toll on the trees. Branches just couldn’t withstand the weight of the ice and were littered all over yards, roofs, roads…even a few whole trees met an icy death. Half the town lost power and some people went without it for two days. Fleets of electric trucks rolled into town, truck after truck, after truck. It was almost eery, like a small electrical army taking over. Hopefully everyone’s power is back on by now and as I drove around today, people were out and about, busy in their yards chopping down trees, picking up branches and fallen debris, burning brush. Spring is coming. I can feel it. Well, almost.

I was planning to take a few more pictures of the ice, because everything looked so pretty. Seriously like a movie set or something. It reminded me of the ice queen from Narnia, everything dripping with icicles. Unfortunately I ended up having to work until close because someone decided they weren’t going to tell us they were quitting, until 3 hours before their shift. So…Friday afternoon was spent baking and soup making, latte drinking and of course dishes. There are always dishes.cherry scones A Different Blend

Dishes, ugh.

Saturday the fam and I (mom, dad, grandma) headed over to the middle of the state to “baby shower it up” in honor of my cousin Sarah and her pregnant belly. I both proudly and reluctantly won the “guess the melted candy bar in the diaper” game. I wasn’t sure if I should be proud of myself for recognizing and naming all the candy bars, or ashamed :). It’s always great to get to hang with my extended family and Saturday was no exception. My cousin is due in about a month, she looks like she’s ready to go any day now. Her and her husband have decided to keep the gender a surprise and also the names they’ve picked out, so everyone’s waiting anxiously for that little one to make an appearance. IMG_1536

I made the baby a little stuffed giraffe. It pretty much took me most of Thursday to make it, but I’m pleased with how it turned out.

IMG_1529I also made my other cousin’s daughter this custom doll for her one year birthday. I made the dress and headband to match the outfit she wore in her one year baby pictures because it was so adorable.

On the way home Saturday night my friend Maggie texted me and we decided to head to West Branch to check out it’s annual Art and Wine Walk. We got there about 30 minutes from closing time, so we ran around from shop to shop sampling whatever each place had left to offer and checking out the art work. Maggie has a friend that just opened a bakery/cafe/coffee shop downtown, so we ended the night there. The place is full of artisan breads and pastries. He started loading us up with coffee and baked goods, then cheesecake, chocolate mousse cups, carrots and hummus, bruschetta, paninis, muffins, the list goes on. We each got to come home with boxes of treats and a loaf of bread. It was a whirlwind of a night, but so much fun to get out and do something out of the ordinary.

This morning I woke up, made myself an egg, toasted some of the bread from last night, added a couple avocado slices and a few dashes of hot sauce…delish. Then I proceeded to go back to bed. I spent most of this day being lazy, but I did manage to clean up my sewing mess, go get some supplies from my dad’s scrap wood piles to make a clothing rack, and eat a Big Mac. Yep, that’s right, I ate a Big Mac today. I think it’s been at least 4 years since I’ve had a Big Mac, if not longer. For some reason it just sounded good. It wasn’t. It’ll probably be at least another 4 years before I forget that it wasn’t good and try another one.

Well that’s it for this weekend. Time for me to get back under those blankets and enjoy the down comforter while I can!

Pieces…Mother’s Day Edition

This is my Mom. She came to visit us for Mother’s Day. This week’s “pieces” were taken from her visit.

We walked around downtown Waxahachie and I forced her to stop for this photo op. I think it turned out great!

We were nosey for about 40 minutes trying to see some action on this movie set.

It rained some and my brother and I both had to work a lot, but we tried to make the most of it.

I also forced my mom to have this photo shoot with me on Mother’s Day. I don’t know why I like this one so much. Well, probably because it just makes me laugh every time I look at it.   Marianne will probably hate me for posting this, but it could have been worse:).

We went to Urban Taco for Mother’s Day lunch. Delicious.

Remember when I said I had wished I’d taken pictures of my food last time I was at Urban Taco? Well, yeah…forgot this time too:) Luckily my brother had this picture.Monday we both have the day off, so we set off on a little Dallas adventure.

First stop…Hypnotic Donuts

The Evil Elvis…donut, peanut butter, bacon, banana and honey

After lunch we decided to jump on the Dart since all of us love a good public transportation system, but had never riden the Dart.

We headed to the Dallas Zoo. Where I was a bit skeptical and always wary of escaping gorillas…or chimps…or tigers for that matter. I was pleasantly surprised and thankfully still alive and in one piece.

This for some reason happens to be the ONLY picture I took at the zoo. Why??

After the zoo there was a ride on the trolly, a stop for coffee (of course) and then some Serious Pizza. Which by the way is the perfect name for this pizza place with pizzas the size of your house.

There was also a couple of trips to Pinkberry, some thrifting, church, movies, a marriage proposal, a book signing, shish kabobs, coffee training…you know, the usual. I would definitely say it was a good week and I’m so thankful that I got to spend it with my mom.

Lately:

Brussel Sprouts for dinner
Found a new old Michigan mug to add to my collection right here in TexasIt was definitely time to trade in the old walletThe beginnings of a salad from homegrown lettuce!
Tomatoes are turning red!

I got a little help with the fence!
This weekend we went camping with our church at Hi View Ranch. We had a bonfire complete with S’mores, went horseback riding, tenting, fishing, picnic-ing, played several rounds of dodgeball, shot some arrows in archery, had great fellowship, fajitas and sing-a-longs, and then got welts and bruises while paintballing….all in a day and half whew.

And a church function just isn’t complete without someone locking their keys in their car right? At least it wasn’t me this time.

Wow oh wow. This has been a LONG, busy week. I managed to take  a few pictures to show you some pieces of my life this week…

We were hoping to grill out for Easter, but Mother Nature had other plans. As soon as we got out of church it started to down pour. We had a few friends over and we finally decided on Easter tacos. We live in Texas, what do you expect?? It’s not Easter without deviled eggs though, those eggs look familiar?

My current favorite muffin/cupcake liners. They started out as bright purple, pink and orange and once baked turned to nice jeweled tones. Love.

Grocery runs. Not the worst kind of runs you could have:). Sorry, that was uncalled for, I’m 12. I couldn’t see where I was going, this is typical.

I saw twin cars while walking.

And for my failures this week…these were supposed to be cookies?

Finally got around to filing my taxes and I owe the government money. Fail. I was a little bit infuriated. I asked this question to the Turbo Tax experts. They didn’t respond. I’m almost not kidding though. (As you can see I was a little upset, I had to repeat myself…next year).

This pretty, chocolate, raspberry filled cupcake from one of my dear friends helped out with some of that frustration:)

And coffee is just always a good idea. I spent a couple hours up at Oak Cliff Coffee on Friday doing some training. 2 hours of pulling espresso shots + no food because I was running late = jittery awesomeness.

What about you? What did you do this week?

Pieces

So I missed my “pieces” post the last couple of weeks. Sorry about that. Here’s a little bit of what I’ve been up to the past couple weeks. I’ve been working on that fence today, but it’s still not finished. Ugh. I do have some sprouts already in the garden. Beans! I’ve got bean sprouts. And some radishes too. If you didn’t know, radishes are totally rad. I didn’t like them growing up, but my Grandma however has known what was up all along. She’s been putting radishes in her tossed salads for years. Such a smart lady she is.

Here’s the beginnings of my fence.

Shorts and tights weather.

The brother and I made this delicious meal one night.
I came across this door on a little day off adventure and this old abandoned house that I want to be MINE!!

There was a little dumpster diving for newspapers for my garden project.

Blood Oranges…they’re just so pretty!

I’m thankful for friends. Even if they’re younger than me. Whatever. It’s never dull.

We went to Mexico Oak Cliff to this Mexican restaurant. It was the real deal. We were the only group fo 12 white people anywhere near this place. I ate cow tongue. I did NOT enjoy it.

I attempted some bread again. This time…not so good. You live and learn.

Hey look, I’ve got dreadlocks. I should write about those sometime because I never document them at all. Haggard hair.

This week in my world…

It rained in Texas, for about 2 days. This is Dan’s homemade, organic rain gear. We got a kick out of it.

Chad finally put together our grill. We’ve concluded it’s made for either midgets or lazy people, because it only comes about thigh high.

First attempts at a planter.

We’ve got baby lettuce.

Speaking of babies…I had nursery duty this week.

Speaking of duty…one of the babies had doodie all over and I tried my best not to gag the entire time I was cleaning it up. {She is not that baby}

Then afterwards we had Chipotle for lunch. I won’t even make jokes about their burritos being comparable to a dirty diaper…

Hope you all had a great week!

This week…

I am still currently the Fruit Ninja master with this high score.

Onions and garlic. Great for keeping vampires at bay, or to add flavor to chicken pot pie.

The ole Suburban needed some oil. I had to stand on a chair to fill it, it was windy, I was wearing a dress…awkward.Blueberry Maple Breakfast Bake for the Bliss Breakfast. Recipe here.

I got a new dress and the weather is perfect.

Scary outtakes from my brother and I’s impromptu “photo booth” shoot. (I look like I have a burn victim beard. weird).

Beads. I wanted them all.

Boots + Pattern.Spell check may have come in handy?

If I had an extra $100 this would so be mine, it was way cool.

Creepy shed that I was concerned was holding dead bodies or something of the sort. So naturally I should stop for a photo op.

Hope you all had a great week! I’m planning to get some spring cleaning done tomorrow…we’ll see how long that lasts before I get distracted.
