Friday.

Today is Friday. Not just any Friday. Depending on what part of the world you live in, it’s High Friday, Long Friday, Sad Friday, Holy Friday, Passion Friday, Friday of Lamentation, Great Friday, or Day of Christ’s Suffering. Around these parts we like to call it Good Friday.

(On a side note, today also happens to be Earth Day. This year, I plan on referring to it as “Creator of the Earth-Day.” Nice huh.)

Anyway, I just wanted to take a couple of minutes before this day gets crazy, to post something and to encourage everyone to take some time today to really reflect on the sacrifice that Christ made for us and the grace and freedom that we can now experience that came as a result. While we were yet sinners….

This is a song by John Mark McMillan.  If you don’t own every one of his albums you should go buy them now. Well, watch this first, then go buy them. I love this song. It’s one of those that stirs up your insides. Read the lyrics and then watch the video. I think you’ll be glad you did. (under the video check out the bonus features)

Though the Earth Cried out for blood
Satisfied her hunger was
Her billows calmed on raging seas
for the souls of men she craved

Sun and moon from balcony
Turned their head in disbelief
Their precious Love would taste the sting
disfigured and disdained

On Friday a thief
On Sunday a King
Laid down in grief
But awoke with keys
Of Hell on that day
The first born of the slain
The Man Jesus Christ
Laid death in his grave

So three days in darkness slept
The Morning Sun of righteousness
But rose to shame the throes of death
And over turn his rule

Now daughters and the sons of men
Would pay not their dues again
The debt of blood they owed was rent
When the day rolled a new

On Friday a thief
On Sunday a King
Laid down in grief
But awoke holding keys
To Hell on that day
The first born of the slain
The Man Jesus Christ
Laid death in his grave

On Friday a thief
On Sunday a King
Laid down in grief
But awoke with keys
Of Hell on that day
The first born of the slain
The Man Jesus Christ
Laid death in his grave

He has cheated
Hell and seated
Us above the fall
In desperate places
He paid our wages
One time once and for all

I came across this death in his grave: a line-by-line commentary  on John Mark’s blog pertaining to this song. Definitely a MUST read!

Thanks for the link. He has always been my favorite lyricist. How many times have I thought if only I could write like JMM. Plus that song is my favorite on that album so I LOVED reading this.

  2. […] McMillan says it best in his song “Death In His Grave.” I wrote about that last year, in this post, you can take a look The $1.91 mark…real classy. Like this:LikeBe the first to like this post. […]
